Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I qualify for the program?

To qualify for ISET’s J-1 program, you must have:

  • 2 years+ of teaching experience
  • University degree in Education (equivalent to U.S. bachelor’s degree)
  • Qualifications to teach in your country
  • English level to lead students in an American classroom
  • Professional references, attesting to your good reputation and character
  • A foreign credential evaluation report which documents a U.S. bachelor’s degree
  • Background clearance check
  • Sufficient funds in the bank to document your ability to travel to the US and sustain your livelihood for period of time.
From the date of application when do I receive information if I continue with my process?
For the initial interview it can take between 3 and 7 business days. It is the review of initial documents, and if everything is in order you are scheduled for an initial interview

What do International Schools look for?

International Schools look for fully qualified and skilled teachers with teaching experience. They also need to know that you can adapt to working in their school and the culture of the country. Flexibility and adaptability are key qualities as are experience and professional knowledge.

What are the application charges? Do I need to pay any additional charges for applying through ISET?
We don’t charge you anything to get jobs through our organization. We’d recommend you to be careful of any recruitment company that tries to take any money from you under our name. The only costs you may have to bear would be regarding your documentation process— after you’ve been offered a job position (such as document notarisation or medicals for visas), which would be 100% borne by you.

ISET provides selection, orientation, supervision and complementary activities services that do not generate a cost to the participant.

There is no set fee for the teacher.

In addition, ISET provides medical insurance.

The operational service is absorbed by the US school districts.

What will my program be like? What should I expect from my program?
1. School work – You will have a full-time teaching position at a school. You will be a valued member of the school and offer your professional techniques to your colleagues.

2. Cultural exchange – You will learn about the culture of the United States, and you will teach your class and colleagues about your home country culture. You will be required to participate in and report to ISET at least two cross-cultural activities each year — one that teaches about your home country and one that involves cross-cultural communication between your students and students of another country.

3. Boutique style – ISET provides boutique style services meaning we are not in the mass production of teachers we are rigores in selecting teacher

Which are the participant states in the U.S.?
Arizona, California, Texas.
Do teachers from native English speaking countries need to have an English proficiency test?
Candidates from English speaking countries (UK, Canada, Jamaica, Ghana, for example) do NOT need to provide an English proficiency test score.

Because you come from an English Speaking Country you do not need to submit english exam results but you will need to submit proof that English proficiency is needed to be admitted to University or that courses taken in University are in English.

Is TESOL certification an English proficiency test?
TESOL certification is NOT an English proficiency test and should not be counted as such.
What is TOEFL?
TOEFL is a standardized English proficiency exam.

Should a specific English proficiency exam be required for the state you would like or have chosen to work in be needed, you will be informed.

Can I proceed with the application even if I don't have my TOEFL certificate yet?

Yes, also you can take the two free English assessments and submit results into the platform.

What are reference letters?
Reference letters– Letters of reference should be on official letterhead from the school/entity and be signed and translated to English. There are three (3) required for this process.

1. A letter verifying you have a full-time teaching job (from your principal, head of school, school director, etc.)

2. A letter from a supervisor or former supervisor that testifies to your teaching skills and character

3. A letter from a colleague that testifies to your teaching skills and character
